Years ago I stepped into management confident and excited. My value, as I saw it, was that I knew the work and how to do it well. The problem was I did not have a clear understanding of what management work is and how to do that work well.

Eventually, after filling several different management roles and never feeling like I was succeeding, I concluded that I just did not have what it takes to be a good manager. It was not until I stepped back from management that I began to understand what the real problem was.

What became clear to me is that being a great performer and being a great manager are two entirely different things. Management is a distinct discipline. It has its own demands, its own skillsets, and its own definition of success. The trap that so many people fall into is not approaching management as the distinct profession it actually is.

This is not just my story. The same pattern shows up in managers across various industries and virtually all experience levels. Seeing how many managers are impacted by this problem is what inspired me to pursue a solution.
